Writing: Common Mistakes

Avoiding these common pitfalls in IELTS Writing will significantly boost your score across all four marking criteria.

Task Response: Not Answering the Question

This is the most critical error. You must address all parts of the question. If it asks for advantages and disadvantages, you must discuss both.

Common Error: "Question: 'Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of tourism.' The essay only discusses the advantages."

How to Improve: "A balanced essay that dedicates one body paragraph to advantages and another to disadvantages."

Coherence & Cohesion: No Clear Paragraphs

Your essay must be organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. A wall of text is difficult to read and will be penalized.

Common Error: "A single, long block of text containing multiple, mixed ideas."

How to Improve: "Using a 4-paragraph structure (Intro, Body 1, Body 2, Conclusion) with clear topic sentences for each body paragraph."

Lexical Resource: Using Informal Language

Task 2 requires a formal or semi-formal tone. Avoid using slang, contractions (don't, can't), or overly casual words.

Common Error: "Nowadays, lots of kids are getting hooked on video games."

How to Improve: "In recent years, an increasing number of children have become addicted to video games."

Grammar: Only Using Simple Sentences

To get a high score for 'Grammatical Range', you must show you can use a mix of simple and complex sentences (e.g., using conjunctions like 'although', 'whereas', 'because').

Common Error: "Cities are noisy. They are also crowded. This causes stress."

How to Improve: "Many people experience stress as a result of living in cities, which are often noisy and crowded."

Task 1: No Overview/Summary

In Academic Task 1, the overview paragraph that summarizes the main trends is essential for a score of Band 6 or higher. Without it, you cannot score well.

Common Error: "The report starts describing details immediately after the introduction."

How to Improve: "After the introduction, a sentence like: 'Overall, the chart shows a significant increase in X, while Y experienced a steady decline.'"
