I have always felt deeply uncomfortable with commercial roadside zoos where wild creatures pace back and forth in sterile concrete enclosures, which is why visiting the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand two years ago was such an uplifting revelation. Situated in a lush river valley outside Chiang Mai, it is a renowned rescue sanctuary for distressed Asian elephants.

What makes this sanctuary world-renowned is its unyielding commitment to ethical welfare. Every elephant residing on the grounds was rescued from abusive logging operations, street begging, or tourist riding camps. In stark contrast to exploitative tourist venues, there are zero tricks, zero circus performances, and absolutely no riding allowed. Visitors observe the elephants from raised wooden skywalks as the herds roam freely across vast open pastures, forage naturally on bamboo, and bathe in the river of their own volition.

We accompanied an experienced conservation biologist who explained the complex matriarchal social structures of elephants and how sanctuaries rehabilitate severe psychological trauma in animals that spent decades in chains. Watching a previously abused blind matriarch gently nudge and trumpet alongside her adopted herd was an intensely moving sight. It convinced me that genuine conservation must never be about human entitlement; it is about providing wounded creatures with safety, bodily autonomy, and species-appropriate dignity.
