Although I have taken countless train journeys across different continents, nothing has ever matched the sheer futuristic thrill of riding the Shanghai Maglev train in China. I had the privilege of experiencing it a couple of years ago when traveling from Pudong International Airport into the downtown core.
What sets the Maglev completely apart from conventional railway locomotives is that it lacks wheels entirely. Instead, it relies on electromagnetic levitation: powerful magnets lift the entire train carriage about fifteen millimeters above a specialized guideway, while magnetic pulses propel it forward. Because there is virtually zero mechanical friction between the train and the track, it achieves velocities that are frankly mind-boggling.
Watching the digital speedometer mounted on the cabin bulkhead was mesmerizing. Within just three minutes of pulling away from the platform, the train smoothly accelerated to an astonishing four hundred and thirty-one kilometers per hour. Outside the window, highway traffic appeared frozen, yet inside the cabin, the ride was remarkably quiet and stable—you could balance a coin on its edge without it toppling over. Experiencing that level of precision engineering made me realize that high-speed magnetic transit could revolutionize regional travel and provide a clean alternative to short-haul commercial aviation.

Primarily due to astronomical capital expenditure. Maglev lines require entirely bespoke guideways and cannot integrate with existing steel rail networks, making government infrastructure funding difficult to justify compared to upgrading standard high-speed rail lines.
