That is why the most empowering practical skill I have acquired outside formal schooling is basic automotive vehicle maintenance.

Ashamed of my utter helplessness, I turned to my uncle, who had spent forty years working as an aircraft technician. He taught me how to securely position a hydraulic jack, replace brake pads, flush the radiator coolant, and test a car battery using a multimeter.
