I have visited my fair share of cathedrals, but nothing could have prepared me for the eccentric wonder that is the Underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, situated roughly fifty kilometers north of Bogotá in Colombia. I heard about it through a fellow traveler at a hostel who insisted it was like walking onto the film set of a science fiction movie.
What makes this place so extraordinary is that it is carved entirely within the tunnels of a functioning underground salt mine, approximately two hundred meters below ground. As you descend through the gloomy subterranean shafts, the temperature plunges, and the air tastes distinctly salty. You follow a winding route representing the Stations of the Cross, each chamber illuminated by eerie blue, violet, and amber spotlights cast against rough-hewn rock-salt walls.
The climax is the main cavern, which features a monumental sixteen-meter-high crucifix carved directly into the central salt wall, flanked by massive pillars supporting the ceiling. To be completely honest, I had expected a tacky tourist gimmick, but standing in that colossal, echoing vault was surprisingly awe-inspiring. It astonished me how Colombian miners and sculptors managed to transform a hazardous industrial workspace into a deeply atmospheric sanctuary of faith and geological beauty.
