Describe a body of water (river, lake, or ocean) you found breathtaking

Having grown up far from rugged wilderness, the single body of water that rendered me completely spellbound is Lake Moraine, situated in Banff National Park within the Canadian Rockies. I traveled there during an autumn road trip, arriving at its shoreline just as morning mist was lifting from the water.

The lake sits nestled in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, encircled by colossal amphitheaters of sheer limestone cliffs crowned with glaciers and dusting of fresh snow. What takes your breath away the instant you lay eyes on it is the surreal, hypnotic color of the water. Because it is fed by melting glacial runoff, microscopic silt particles known as glacial rock flour remain suspended in the water, scattering light in the green and blue wavelengths. The result is an electric, luminous turquoise that looks almost artificially saturated.

I rented a wooden canoe and paddled out into the dead center of the lake. Gliding across that glassy, mirror-like surface with absolute silence enveloping the valley was an ethereal experience. When you dip your fingers into that pristine, ice-cold water and gaze down into the crystal-clear depths reflecting the jagged mountain peaks, a profound stillness washes over your mind. It is a sacred reminder of how immaculate our planet can be when nature is preserved in its wild, unblemished state.
